Tracking: What is it?

In tracking, the dog learns to follow a scent trail on the ground. This trail is created by ground disturbances caused by human footsteps (in our case, tracklayers) on a specific surface (e.g., meadow, field). The dog must locate “lost” objects made from various materials such as wood, textiles, leather, plastic, etc., and indicate their presence by stopping. The handler follows the dog at a distance of 10 meters (either with a tracking line or off-leash). The dog must convincingly follow the track and quickly and accurately indicate the objects.

The IGP-FH represents the highest discipline in tracking work:

  • The length of the track is 1,800 paces.

  • The track includes several legs, corners and an arc.

  • The track must "age" for 3 hours before being worked.

  • Additionally, a "cross track" is laid 30 minutes before the main track is worked, which the dog must ignore.

  • Two such tracks must be searched on two different days.

  • To pass the test, both tracking tasks must be successfully completed.
